One of the distinctions lies in that, at least in the US, pornography is legal while prostitution is not. They are both sex work (and there are other kinds out there), but for some ridiculous reason it's legally ok to get paid to have sex in front of a camera but not behind closed doors. Since prostitution (which I know is a frowned upon term among sex workers because it's been often used to dehumanize them, kind of like "homosexual" may be used to dehumanize gays and lesbians) is illegal, these
